Inner Life Work resources are therapist-designed educational tools for self-guided reflection. They are not therapy, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and they are not a substitute for care from a licensed professional. If you are struggling, please reach out to a qualified provider. In the US you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Description

When your system keeps preparing for danger

Hypervigilance can look like constant scanning, a heightened startle response, difficulty relaxing, racing thoughts, bracing, irritability, or a body that stays activated after the moment has passed. It can also move in the other direction: numbness, shutdown, disconnection, or difficulty finding your way back into the room.

Always On gives you a structured way to understand those responses and practise meeting them with more information, choice, and support. The workbook stays focused on what your system is doing now. It does not ask you to describe traumatic experiences, revisit specific memories, trigger yourself, or diagnose yourself.

What you will work through

  1. When Your System Stays On — notice how protection can outlast the immediate danger.
  2. How the Threat Response Works — understand how attention, body preparation, fight, flight, and freeze can interact.
  3. Mapping Your States — recognise patterns of hyperarousal, workable regulation, and hypoarousal.
  4. Coming Down From High Alert — test grounding, orienting, movement, sensory contact, paced breathing, and other regulation options.
  5. Reconnecting When You Shut Down — notice shutdown and identify ways to reconnect.
  6. Building Greater Flexibility — practise creating a pause and widening your available choices.
  7. Your Always On Support Plan — gather warning signs, matched strategies, support conversations, and next steps into a plan you can revisit.
